TRAUMAPLAY® - PLAY THERAPY FOR THE TREATMENT OF TRAUMA with Paris Goodyear Brown

TraumaPlay™ is a play therapy model for the treatment of traumatised children. It has been developed over the past 20 years by Paris Goodyear-Brown, who has worked with children and families with complex trauma to integrate different evidence-based treatments into a developmentally sensitive play-based game across the treatment continuum. TraumaPlay™ provides a best practice framework for trauma work with families, while encouraging ongoing assessment and offering flexibility to the therapist to tailor treatment to the needs of individual families. Therapists using Play Therapy need to be able to explain their clinical choices throughout the intake process when working with traumatised children and families. TraumaPlay™ translates the treatment of trauma with children into a sequence of play-based modules that use the intersection of the neurobiology of play and the neurobiology of trauma, taking into account current evidence-based approaches in the field of trauma. Each module represents an important dimension of play therapy for the treatment of trauma, and articulates both a specific treatment goal and accompanying interventions. The child's metaphorical use of the playroom is demonstrated through a multitude of case examples and augmented with a variety of object-based play therapy interventions. This flexible, phase-based model differentiates between trauma treatment goals, which are best achieved through non-directive play therapy methods, and affective and emotional sphere goals, which include attachment-focused play therapy approaches. The latter involve parents as partners, cognitive-behavioural play therapy interventions, sandtray methods and other expressive therapy techniques. This training will illustrate possible treatment of trauma and a multitude of practical clinical tools that can be immediately integrated into practice.
