ONNO VAN DER HART

Among the leading international experts on trauma-related dissociation and complex trauma-related disorders, including dissociative disorders.

Psychologist, psychotherapist, qualified family therapist and researcher, he is professor emeritus of psychopathology of chronic traumatization at the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, Utrecht University, The Netherlands, and, until January 1, 2013, psychologist/psychotherapist at Sinai Center for Mental Health, Amstelveen.

He is a clinical consultant at the Center for Post-Trauma Therapy and Trauma Eduction, in Helsinki and Oulu, Finland.

Author of many publications on trauma, in Italy he has published Fantasmi nel sé. Trauma and treatment of structural dissociation (Cortina), La cura della dissociazione traumatica. A practical and integrative approach (Mimesis), The traumatic dissociation (Mimesis).
In the field of psychotraumatology, the concept of (trauma-related) dissociation is being increasingly used and is receiving more and more meanings—so much that it has become unclear what a clinician or researcher has in mind using it.

In order to provide some conceptual house-cleaning, this lecture highlights the original narrow understanding of the concept (and related terms) as a division/doubling of the personality.

And it focuses on the ever-broader understandings of the concept, which includes detachment, as in depersonalization and derealization.

These two concepts have become so popular, that they started to overshadow the original narrow understanding, as exemplified in the DSM-5’s dissociative subtype of PTSD.

Arguments are provided for a return to the original understanding of (trauma-related) dissociation.
